My daughter also had heart-rate drops (3 of them) during labor, then couldn't make it past my bones when pushing, so we had to go c-section as well. Like you, I wanted to do it without the epidural (made it to 8cm, then my daughter's heart-rate drops made it so I couldn't focus anymore, and the doc wanted me prepped anyways, in case I needed an emergency c-section). Thankfully, my daughter never needed the NICU, but I do understand.
